On Feb. 28, 1995, Denver International Airport (DEN) opened to the public and captured the world’s attention with its striking tented roof structure and technologically advanced operations. Later this week, DEN will begin a year-long 20th Anniversary celebration that includes milestones and events that will only continue to strengthen the airport’s position as an economic powerhouse.
Over the last two decades, DEN has proven to be an economic engine for the city and state, and today generates an economic benefit of more than $26.3 billion annually to Colorado and supports nearly 190,000 jobs. DEN is now the 5th-busiest airport in America and the 15th-busiest in the world.
This fall will be the opening of the 519-room Westin Denver International Airport hotel and conference center as well as the new open-air public plaza that will be Denver’s newest venue for arts, entertainment and relaxation. The commuter rail service, operated by RTD, will become operational in 2016, connecting the airport to Denver Union Station in 35 minutes.
